DXF Contour Import

#1

Hello,

I am trying out the Lite version of Kubla Cubed 2024. I am hoping to use this for importing an existing terrain model, then overlaying a design to determine cuts and fills.

First, I am having trouble getting elevation data from an imported DXF contour file. I am trying to use a DXF contour file exported from Drone-Deploy. When I roll the mouse over the imported contour data, The X and Y coordinates will show, but no elevation is given. The DXF file does have a Z-coordinate, so it appears that Kubla is not fully interpreting the file, or not using the elevation data embedded in the file.

Hi RaisinToe, please send through your DXF/KCP files to support@kublasoftware.com and we can review the data on our machines.

Kate, I sent an email with those files. The email is titled "Response to recent Surveying thread"

Thank you for your help.

Apologies for the delayed response, and thank you for highlighting this issue. The problem seems to arise when surfaces are exported with colours. In such cases, the mesh is split into clusters based on each colour. This happens because CAD formats like DWG and DXF don’t support textures, only vertex colours.

Additionally, CAD doesn’t handle scenarios where a colour ramp spreads multiple colours across a triangle, which can introduce inaccuracies. As a result, we currently support only discrete colours, which can lead to the splitting of the mesh. We understand that this approach can seem pedantic and confusing, and we’re actively looking for a better solution.

We’ve seen vertex colour exports in other programs that look good and we always try to give the user what they need, in this case maybe with a warning about the issue of colours that are banded across triangles, and as part of the V7.5 update, we’ll be focusing on exports and examining how to improve this functionality.

In the meantime, for your specific scenario, the simplest workaround is to export without shaded colours.
